 Firing Policies *

  • Firing Package: Only mid-range, cone 5-6 clay from our studio will be fired.

    Only clay purchased as a part of our Firing Packages will be fired.

    Condition: Items must be completely dry and ready for firing upon drop-off. All pieces should have a legible name or maker’s mark.

    Glaze: All glazes must be approved for compatibility with our kiln, only cone 5-6 glazes. Please be prepared to provide documentation for glaze maturity and application.

    Testing: Test tiles are required for new or layered glazes. Studio glazes are available but not included; arrangements can be made for their use.

  • Please fill out the firing form below to purchase a Firing Package or to drop off your items. We can't fire items without this form.

  • Cash or Venmo is accepted when you purchase a Firing Package. We cannot accept checks. 

  • Standard Time: Expect your fired work within two weeks

    Large Pieces: May take longer due to kiln space

    Special Requests: Lead time requests can be accommodated when possible

    $20 Surcharge for glaze firing beads due to additional labor

    All work not picked up within 30 days of firing will be will be considered abandoned and recycled and no refund given.

  • Firing pottery can sometimes lead to damage due to various factors such as lack of structural integrity, moisture in the pieces, or glaze application. Hilo Bay Pottery is not responsible for any damages that may occur as a result of these issues.

    If we accidentally damage your pieces while handling them or due to our error or kiln mechanical error, we offer either replacement clay or a partial refund of the firing cost.

  • Right to Refuse: Each piece will be inspected to ensure it is kiln-ready. We may reject items with construction or glaze issues.

    We will not fire combustible materials or anything other than clay.

    Responsibility for Damages: Artists will cover any costs from damages your work causes.

    Damages:

    • Glaze Drips: $20 per piece for grinding

    • Shelf Replacement: $90 for a damaged half shelf

    • Kiln Damage: Costs may exceed $1,000

    Acknowledgment: You understand the risks and hold Hilo Bay Pottery harmless from liabilities due to your pottery.
